News and Updates for Tirreno-Adriatico 2012

Overlapping with Tirreno-Adriatico through Sunday March 11th is Paris-Nice: live video, results, photos and video everyday

March 12 update: This is about the easiest time trial course you'll could ever ask for; it's basically a flat, out and back 9.3 km course on the San Benedetto del Tronto shoreline. Other than the first km and the turn around, this course is literally straightforward. It's all about pure power so surely Fabian Cancellara will win it, but the GC is where the real battle will be fought.
After six stages, the podium for this year's the race is decided and the now time trial will settle the order. Only six seconds separate the top three riders: Chris Horner (RadioShack-Nissan), Roman Kreuziger (Astana) and Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) so there should be a thrilling conclusion to Tirreno-Adriatico 2012. Stage 4 results: Peter Sagan wins in Chieti

Michele Scarponi (inset) is looking to win in Chieti for the third straight year. The narrow, steep, cobbled finish up to the town square has become symbolic of this race
Finish Profile:

March 9 update: Stage 4 is very long at 252 km and it ends with the steep, uphill, cobbled finish in Chieti (see finish profile above) with a max grade of 19% (12.2% average). Michele Scarponi has won this stage the last two years.

Stage 3 results: Team Sky sprint win again, but this time it's Edvald Boassan Hagen

March 8 update: After a rolling, relatively short 178 km route southeast along spine of Italy, stage 4 will have a flat finish Terni, located in the center of mainland Italy. Tirreno-Adriatico hasn't finished here recently, but other than several left hand turns in the final 3.5 km (finish map) this looks straight-forward for another sprint finish. Stage 2 results: Mark Cavendish (Sky) is the easy sprint finish winner in Indicatore

Garmin's Tyler Farrar won the sprint finish in Indicatore last year
March 7 update: Garmin's Tyler Farrar is back to defend his sprint finish win in Indicatore, but Mark Cavendish is the heavy favorite this year. The long, straight final km is made for the pure sprinters. See the stage profile, map and timetable in the race summary table (right). — Steve

Action from last year's opening team time-trial won by Rabobank
March 6 update: Naturally, as you'd expect, stage 1 starts on the west coast of Italy. Race organizers RCS likes an opening team time trial in their stage races these days. Similar to last year's start we'll open with a flat, 16.9 km team time trial with 4 sharp corners but mostly uneventful which is the way most riders like it although the roads will be narrow at points passing through vineyards. This stage starts and finishes in San Vincenzo and Donoratico, respectively, which are the same host towns used by last February's, G.P. Costa degli Etruschi classic.
RadioShack-Nissan with last weekend's Strade Bianche winner and multiple world time-trial champion, Fabian Cancellara, are among the favorites. Although, Matt White, sport director of GreenEdge, feels "GreenEdge, Sky and BMC are the top teams for Wednesday's stage."
